Michał Obuchowski, GOG’s publishing technical manager, has become intimately familiar with the challenges posed by Microsoft’s evolving operating system. In a recent interview with RPGSite, Obuchowski detailed how seemingly minor Windows updates can have catastrophic effects on older games. “Microsoft is reworking how elevation works – the old ‘click Yes’ on a UAC prompt is being replaced by something called Administrator Protection, where the system spins up a hidden, one-time admin account and a short-lived token gated behind Windows Hello,” he explained, highlighting the technical complexities his team must navigate daily.

Security Updates Creating Unexpected Compatibility Nightmares

While Obuchowski acknowledges that Microsoft’s security improvements serve legitimate purposes, the implementation creates significant headaches for preservation efforts. “It’s a reasonable security move, but for us it changes how a game asks for the permissions it needs,” he noted. The real challenge lies in the unpredictable nature of these changes. “And the catch is you don’t really know what actually changed until Microsoft ships a preview.” This reactive approach forces GOG’s technical team to constantly adapt their compatibility solutions, often discovering problems only after they’ve already affected users trying to play their purchased games.

However, this forward-looking approach comes at a cost. “The further Windows travels from its roots, the more 30-year-old baggage it drags along,” Obuchowski observed. “And Microsoft keeps trimming it: DirectShow suffered a regression in newer Windows 11 builds, causing some classic game videos to break in spectacular ways, legacy drivers, old copy-protection schemes which may prove tricky to remove, making it ever more important to ship games DRM-free.”

The Fragile Nature of Digital Gaming History

Every Windows update carries the potential to break games that have functioned perfectly for years or even decades. As Obuchowski succinctly put it: “Every time a piece of Windows gets retired, something from 1998 can stop booting.” This reality underscores why DRM-free distribution has become increasingly vital for preservation. When games are tied to specific protection schemes or require online authentication, they become vulnerable not only to platform changes but also to the potential shutdown of authentication servers. GOG’s commitment to DRM-free releases means that games purchased through their platform can theoretically be played indefinitely, regardless of what happens to the storefront or the gaming industry at large.

Over the years, GOG has performed what many consider miracle work in restoring older games to playable states. The platform has rescued relatively obscure titles like Ecstatica, a 1994 survival horror game that pioneered ellipsoid-based graphics, and Clive Barker’s Undying, a cult classic first-person shooter from 2001 that had become nearly impossible to run on modern systems. Alongside these hidden gems, GOG has preserved genre-defining masterpieces such as the first three Resident Evil games, ensuring that these foundational titles in survival horror remain accessible to both longtime fans and newcomers discovering them for the first time.
