Sports Video Games Explained: A Beginner’s Guide to the Major Series
Who makes EA Sports FC, NBA 2K, Madden, MLB The Show and NHL, how the yearly release model works, and which game modes to expect, as of October 2026.
Walk into the sports section of any digital storefront and you will find a handful of names that come back every single year: EA Sports FC, NBA 2K, Madden NFL, MLB The Show, EA Sports NHL and EA Sports College Football. Add a golf series and a tennis revival and you have most of the modern sports game landscape. For newcomers, the sheer number of editions, modes and currencies can feel like a wall. This guide breaks that wall down into plain pieces: who makes what, why there is a new version every year, what the common modes actually are, and how to choose a starting point.
Everything time-sensitive below is described as of October 2026. Sports games change quickly, so it is always worth checking a publisher’s own page before buying.
The Major Series at a Glance
Most big sports franchises are tied to an official license from a league or players’ association. That license is what lets a game use real team names, logos, kits, stadiums and player likenesses. It also explains why there is usually one dominant game per sport: licenses are often exclusive or so expensive that only one publisher competes.

| Series | Sport | Publisher / developer | Latest edition (as of October 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| EA Sports FC | Football (soccer) | EA Sports / EA Vancouver and EA Romania | EA Sports FC 27 (released September 25, 2026) |
| NBA 2K | Basketball | 2K / Visual Concepts | NBA 2K27 (released September 4, 2026) |
| Madden NFL | American football | EA Sports / EA Orlando | Madden NFL 27 (released August 13, 2026 on consoles and PC) |
| EA Sports College Football | College football | EA Sports / EA Orlando | College Football 27 (released July 9, 2026) |
| MLB The Show | Baseball | Sony Interactive Entertainment / San Diego Studio | MLB The Show 26 (released March 17, 2026) |
| EA Sports NHL | Ice hockey | EA Sports / EA Vancouver | NHL 27 (released September 11, 2026) |
| PGA Tour 2K | Golf | 2K / HB Studios | PGA Tour 2K25 (February 2025; Switch 2 version February 2026) |
| TopSpin | Tennis | 2K / Hangar 13 | TopSpin 2K25 (April 26, 2024) |
A few details in that table are worth unpacking. EA Sports FC is the football series that was called FIFA until 2023; the name changed when EA’s licensing agreement with FIFA ended, but the core game, its licensed leagues and its modes continued. MLB The Show is published by Sony yet is no longer a PlayStation exclusive: it has appeared on Xbox since the 2021 edition and on Nintendo Switch since 2022. College Football 27 is the first game in that revived series to arrive on PC, alongside PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Why a New Edition Arrives Every Year
Annual sports games follow the calendar of the real leagues they represent. Each new season brings roster moves, new rookies, new kits and sometimes rule tweaks, and the yearly edition is the publisher’s way of packaging those changes together with gameplay improvements and refreshed modes. Football, basketball and hockey games tend to launch in late summer or early autumn, just before their real seasons begin, while MLB The Show lands in March ahead of opening day. Madden and College Football aim for July and August, before the American football season.
Release windows are fairly predictable. Many publishers also offer an early-access period of several days for buyers of premium editions, which is why you will see two dates mentioned around launch: early access and the worldwide release.
Not every year brings a full rebuild. Developers often spend one cycle on a big system, such as a new dribbling model or a reworked franchise mode, and use the following editions to refine it. During the season, most series also push live roster and ratings updates, so even a game bought in September keeps changing until the next edition arrives.
Older editions do not last forever online. Publishers eventually switch off servers for past games; for example, NBA 2K23’s online servers were shut down on December 31, 2024. Offline modes usually keep working, but anything that needs a connection, such as card-collecting modes or online leagues, ends with the server shutdown.
The Game Modes You Will See Almost Everywhere
Despite the different sports, the major series share a remarkably similar menu structure. Once you understand these categories, every sports game becomes much easier to navigate.
Exhibition or quick play
A single match with any two teams. EA Sports FC calls it Kick-Off, NBA 2K calls it Play Now, and most other games use some variant of “Play Now” or “Exhibition.” It is the best place to learn controls without pressure.
Career modes
You create a player (or a coach) and guide one career across seasons. Examples include NBA 2K’s MyCAREER, MLB The Show’s Road to the Show, Madden’s Superstar, NHL’s Be a Pro, EA Sports FC’s Player Career and College Football’s Road to Glory. These modes mix on-field play with progression systems and, often, a light story.
Franchise and dynasty modes
Here you run a whole organization: rosters, contracts, drafts or transfers, and many seasons of simulated or played games. Madden Franchise, MLB The Show Franchise, NHL Franchise, NBA 2K’s MyNBA, EA Sports FC Manager Career and College Football Dynasty all belong in this group.
Card-collecting team modes
Ultimate Team (FC, Madden, NHL’s HUT), NBA 2K MyTEAM and MLB The Show’s Diamond Dynasty let you build a squad from player items earned through play or obtained from packs. These modes include optional real-money purchases and paid random items, so they come with pack probability disclosures and are covered by console spending controls. We explain them in neutral detail in a dedicated article.
Online head-to-head and social modes
Ranked or unranked online matches, co-op clubs and social hubs. EA Sports FC 27 groups its social football under The Grounds, which includes Kickabouts, 1v1 matches and Clubs; NBA 2K has The City on current consoles; NHL has World of Chel.
Platforms: Where Each Series Lives in 2026
The platform picture has shifted noticeably in the last two years. Several series have moved to current-generation hardware only, while Nintendo Switch 2 has picked up major sports releases.

- EA Sports FC 27 launched on PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. Its social area The Grounds, including Clubs, is limited to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Switch 2.
- NBA 2K27 is on Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. NBA 2K26 was the last edition released on the original Switch, PS4 and Xbox One.
- Madden NFL 27 is on Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and also arrived on Apple platforms through Apple Arcade.
- College Football 27 is on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and, for the first time, PC.
- MLB The Show 26 is on Nintendo Switch, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
- NHL 27 is on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only; the current NHL games are not released on PC.
If you play on PC, that last point matters: the hockey series remains console-only, while football, basketball, both American football games and golf are available on PC.
Golf and Tennis: The Smaller Series
Not every sport gets a yearly release. Golf and tennis games arrive less frequently and are supported longer through updates.
PGA Tour 2K25, developed by HB Studios and published by 2K, came out on February 28, 2025 for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version following on February 6, 2026. It is the sixth installment of HB Studios’ golf series.
TopSpin 2K25, released April 26, 2024, revived 2K’s long-dormant tennis series. It was developed by Hangar 13 and covers PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
These games reward patience more than reflexes: golf is about reading wind, lie and green slope, while tennis games lean on timing and shot placement. They are also good choices if you want a sports game you can keep for several years without feeling left behind.
How Licenses Shape What You Get
A license does more than put the right logo on a jersey. It determines which competitions appear, which players are in the game, and sometimes which modes are possible. When EA and FIFA parted ways, EA kept the licenses it held separately with leagues, clubs and players, which is why EA Sports FC still features real competitions and footballers even without the FIFA name. College football illustrates the same idea from another angle: EA stopped making college games after NCAA Football 14 in 2013, following a lawsuit from former players over the use of their likenesses, and the series only returned in 2024 once athletes could be compensated for their name, image and likeness.
Exclusivity also explains the lack of competition in some sports. MLB The Show has been the only MLB simulation game on consoles since 2014, and EA’s NBA Live series has been on indefinite hiatus since NBA Live 19 in 2018, leaving NBA 2K without a direct rival.
Choosing Your First Sports Game
The best first sports game is usually the one for the sport you already watch. Knowing the rules and the teams makes the learning curve far gentler. Beyond that, a few practical questions help:
- Do you want to play solo or online? Career and franchise modes are entirely playable offline in most series, while card-collecting and social modes need a connection.
- How much time do you have? A full Madden or NBA 2K game takes a while at default quarter lengths, but every series lets you shorten periods. Golf and tennis rounds are easier to pick up and put down.
- What platform do you own? Check the list above, especially for hockey on PC or for older consoles that some series have left behind.
- Do you need the newest edition? If you mostly play offline, last year’s game often plays nearly as well. If you want online modes and current rosters, the latest edition is the safer choice because older servers eventually close.
Common Beginner Mistakes
- Jumping straight into online play. Online opponents in every series are experienced. Spend time in practice modes, skills trainers and offline matches first.
- Playing on a difficulty that is too high. Every series offers several difficulty levels plus gameplay sliders. Lower settings are not “cheating”; they are how you learn the timing.
- Ignoring the tutorial. Modern sports games teach a lot through built-in training. Ten minutes in a tutorial saves hours of frustration.
- Treating card-collecting modes as the main game. They are one mode among many. Career, franchise and exhibition modes contain the full gameplay without any spending pressure.
- Forgetting the settings menu. Camera angles, assists and controller layouts can transform how a game feels.
Quick FAQ
Is EA Sports FC the same as FIFA?
It is the continuation of EA’s football series. FIFA 23, released in 2022, was the last edition under the FIFA name; EA Sports FC 24 followed in September 2023.
Can I play these games offline?
Most single-player modes work offline, but some features, such as online leagues and card-collecting modes, require a connection. Check each game’s page for specifics.
Once you have picked a series, the natural next step is learning its controls and core modes. Start with exhibition matches, move into a career or franchise when you feel comfortable, and treat online play as the final exam rather than the first lesson.
