MyNBA in NBA 2K Explained: Eras, Leagues and GM Control
How NBA 2K's MyNBA franchise suite works: Eras and when they launched, MyGM vs full control, CBA rules, trades, the draft, league settings and MyNBA Legacy.
For players who care more about building a dynasty than hitting a game-winner, MyNBA is the heart of NBA 2K. It is the series’ franchise suite: you take control of a team (or the whole league) and manage rosters, contracts, trades, drafts and player development across as many seasons as you like. In recent years it has also become a time machine, letting you start in historical eras with period-accurate rosters and presentation. This guide explains what MyNBA offers in NBA 2K27, which launched September 4, 2026, and how its main options differ.
The MyNBA Family of Modes
MyNBA is less a single mode than a set of related experiences, each with a different level of control.
| Mode | What you control | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| MyNBA | Full control over your franchise, and optionally the whole league, with deep customization | Players who want maximum control and realism |
| MyGM | A role-playing take on being a general manager, with relationships and front-office storytelling | Players who enjoy narrative and constraints |
| MyNBA Legacy (new in NBA 2K27) | A player-locked, RPG-style mode spanning a 100-year universe | Players who want a single long-term story |
Long-time players may remember the full-control franchise experience under the MyLEAGUE name. Today the suite carries the MyNBA brand, and in NBA 2K27 the franchise window spans 100 years across MyNBA, MyGM and MyNBA Legacy.
MyNBA Eras: When They Launched and How They Grew
The biggest addition to the suite in recent years is Eras, which let you start a league in a historical period rather than the present day.

- NBA 2K23 (2022) introduced Eras with starting seasons in 1983–84, 1991–92 and 2002–03, alongside the modern-era option. It included fully rendered arenas, logos and jerseys from the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s, plus historic rosters and draft classes.
- NBA 2K24 (2023) added a LeBron era beginning in the 2010–11 season, with presentation inspired by NBA 2K10.
- NBA 2K25 (2024) added a Steph era beginning in the 2016–17 season, including Kevin Durant’s first season with Golden State.
These eras are commonly described by the stars who defined them: Magic vs. Bird, Jordan, Kobe, LeBron and Steph. NBA 2K27 carried the same five eras into MyCAREER, letting you play a single career inside historical leagues; our MyCAREER guide explains how that works.
The appeal of Eras is simple: you can rewrite history. Draft a different player in a famous draft, build a dynasty around a legend or see how a classic team handles a different path. Because historical rosters and draft classes are included, the league evolves in a way that feels connected to real basketball history while still diverging based on your choices.
NBA 2K27: A Back-to-Basics Overhaul
2K described MyNBA in NBA 2K27 as getting “back to basics with a rebuilt core franchise experience,” focusing on requests from long-time players. The key changes fall into a few areas.

Modern CBA rules and contracts
Contracts now follow modern collective bargaining agreement mechanics, including performance-based incentives rated Guaranteed, Likely or Unlikely, second apron trade restrictions, improved first apron effects and limited 10-day contracts in the NBA and WNBA. If you have followed real NBA front offices in recent years, these rules shape almost every big decision.
Free agency
A Moratorium Period adds a menu for pitching marquee free agents, backed by binding promises on roster moves, incentives and loyalty. Breaking promises has consequences.
Trades and roster tools
- Four-team trades with an expanded cap of nine assets per team, plus cash considerations.
- Contract buyouts through a Buyout Market.
- Eurostash contracts for international prospects, fully rewritten.
Team Dynamics and GM Trust
A revamped morale system tracks friendships, rivalries and personality traits. Bonds form from shared history, and grudges can grow from repeated playoff exits. Two stars with high friendship form a Dynamic Duo; three elite-friendship stars form a Big 3.
GM Trust is a new rating used across MyNBA modes. It determines how believable your promises are in free agency and affects locker room morale. In practice, it rewards consistent, honest management.
League Settings and Rule Changes
One of MyNBA’s strengths has always been customization, and NBA 2K27 extends it.
- Rule Change engine. Front offices can explore, review and vote on an unlimited number of offseason proposals, using custom sliders to shape how the league evolves.
- NBA Cup. The in-season tournament appears in player and staff histories, with support for different host cities.
- Modern league formats. Updated All-Star Weekend formats, the 3-2-1 draft lottery, the Clutch Player of the Year award and new playoff series formats are included.
Settings like these let you choose between a strict simulation of the real league and a sandbox where you rewrite the rules. Many players run one realistic save and one experimental save side by side.
The Draft and Player Development
The draft is where long saves are won. MyNBA gives you scouting tools to evaluate prospects, and the draft lottery determines the order for non-playoff teams. NBA 2K27 adds Historic Draft Playlists spanning decades, with Loop, Shuffle and Reverse options. That means a long save can cycle through real historical draft classes rather than relying only on generated prospects.
After the draft, development depends on playing time, training and a player’s potential. Young players with high ceilings may take years to blossom, which is why patience is a key franchise skill. Our franchise modes explainer covers how drafting and development work across sports games more generally.
MyNBA Legacy: A 100-Year Dynasty
New in NBA 2K27, MyNBA Legacy is a player-locked RPG mode. You choose an active star, a prospect or a created player as your Legend, then decide whether to keep their current attributes or revert them to rookie form. You earn Performance Points through stat goals and deep playoff runs.
The twist is generational. Descendants inherit their parent’s rookie profile as a template, along with hereditary traits and permanent bonuses that build toward “Eternal G.O.A.T.” status across a 100-year family tree. It is a very different rhythm from managing a whole franchise: you follow one basketball family across a century.
MyGM vs. Full-Control MyNBA
Choosing between MyGM and full-control MyNBA comes down to what you enjoy.
- Choose MyGM if you like role-play: dealing with owners, players and media, working within constraints and living with relationship consequences.
- Choose full-control MyNBA if you want to manage every detail, adjust league rules, control multiple teams or run a pure simulation.
- Choose MyNBA Legacy if you want a single long-term narrative around one player and his descendants.
GM Trust in NBA 2K27 applies across MyNBA modes, so honest management matters whichever path you choose.
Example: Planning an Eras Save
Eras saves reward a little planning. Here is one way to approach a historical league, using only features available in the mode:
- Pick an era that interests you. A 1983–84 start puts you in the Magic vs. Bird period, while 1991–92 opens in the Jordan years and 2002–03 in the Kobe era. Later editions added LeBron (2010–11) and Steph (2016–17) starting points.
- Decide on realism. Choose whether you want history to follow its course as much as possible or to diverge freely. League settings and the Rule Change engine let you shape how the league evolves over time.
- Use historic draft classes. With Historic Draft Playlists in NBA 2K27, you can keep real draft classes coming in order, shuffle them or even reverse them.
- Review the league’s financial settings. Cap and contract rules shape every roster move, so check them before your first offseason rather than discovering them mid-trade.
- Track your story. Part of the fun of an Eras save is comparing your league to real history. Keeping notes on your trades and draft picks makes long saves more rewarding.
Eras also change the presentation: arenas, logos, jerseys and broadcast styling reflect the period, which makes historical saves feel distinct from a modern league.
MyNBA Glossary
- CBA: The collective bargaining agreement that sets contract and cap rules.
- First and second apron: Payroll thresholds above the salary cap that bring increasing restrictions on trades and signings.
- Moratorium Period: The early free agency window in which teams pitch players before deals are finalized.
- Eurostash: Drafting an international player and leaving him overseas to develop.
- GM Trust: NBA 2K27’s rating that measures how believable your promises are.
- Dynamic Duo / Big 3: Bonds between two or three high-friendship stars under Team Dynamics.
Tips for Your First MyNBA Save
- Start with a familiar team. Knowing the players helps you learn the systems.
- Learn the cap rules. Second apron restrictions limit trades and signings for expensive teams.
- Keep your promises. GM Trust affects free agency and morale.
- Value draft picks. They are your cheapest source of talent.
- Watch chemistry. Team Dynamics means that adding talent can upset relationships.
- Try an Era. Historical starts are one of the most distinctive things about NBA 2K’s franchise suite.
Common Mistakes
- Trading all your picks. Short-term upgrades can leave you with no young talent.
- Ignoring the second apron. Expensive rosters face real restrictions.
- Breaking promises. GM Trust and morale suffer.
- Simulating too fast without checking. Review injuries, morale and contracts between sim blocks.
